What is Africa 100?
The Africa 100 appeal is a farming industry-wide initiative raising funds - not food aid - via donations to support agricultural projects on farms in East Africa through the FARM-Africa charity.

What is FARM-Africa?
FARM-Africa works with poor, small-scale farmers and livestock keepers improving their knowledge and skills so that they can increase their farming productivity.

Why is FARM-Africa and the NFU working together on Africa 100?
The NFU and FARM-Africa are both dedicated to supporting farmers to ensure the future of rural communities. Africa 100 gives UK farmers the chance to support agriculture in developing countries and share knowledge and skills with those working to produce enough food to feed their families.

Why is the appeal called Africa 100?
This year marks the centenary of the NFU and this appeal focuses on working with farmers in Africa through the charity FARM-Africa.

Given the current global food crisis why isn't Africa 100 providing food aid to Africa's hungry?
Africa 100 is about providing long term solutions to rural hunger in Africa by making sure that farmers are able to use basic technologies to produce staple foods and improve livelihoods permanently rather than simply relieving hunger in the short term.

How will the funds raised through Africa 100 be used?
The funds raised through Africa 100 will go to supporting FARM-Africa's Maendeleo Agricultural Technology Fund (MATF) which targets projects that help farmers to use innovative technology to improve staple crops. To see some of the cases studies click here.

What is the Maendeleo Agricultural Technology Fund (MATF)?
The Maendeleo Agricultural Technology Fund funds projects selected by a panel of experts. These projects work with farmer groups to implement new technologies in crop, livestock and natural resource management that increase agricultural production.
Note: Maendeleo is a Swahili word meaning development

How are MATF projects selected?
There are clear guidelines for the selection of the most effective projects and Members of the NFU/Africa 100 Appeal will be part of the selection panel.

How are MATF projects monitored?
Each MATF project provides quarterly reports of activities implemented, outcomes of those activities and expenditure as a record of progress against agreed targets. An external evaluation is conducted when the project has been completed.

How do I know my money is going to Africa 100?
All monies donated to the appeal will go to fund one of the MATF projects. As a registered charity FARM-Africa has its own internal audits as well an external audits by the national Charity Commission.

How much of what I donate to the Africa 100 Appeal is going to the grant programme in Africa?
The NFU and FARM-Africa are covering all the central administration costs of the Appeal. The buyers are covering all the administration costs relating to collecting money from farmers at point of sale. This means that 100% of your donation will go to the grant programme for projects in Africa.

How can I give to Africa 100?

• All donations to Africa 100 are voluntary. Farmers will be encouraged to donate £100 to celebrate the NFU's centenary year. When discussing payment for goods, buyers who are taking part in the appeal will ask farmers 'Can I take £100 for Africa 100?' - if the farmers says yes the money will be sent direct from the buyer to the Africa 100 Appeal Account together with his name and donation amount.

• What is the benefit of gift aid to Africa 100?
